Munich, Germany – Feb 18, 2017 |
World’s largest security conference in Munich was caught off guard on Saturday during a coordinated two-pronged protest campaign organized by Hazara Junbish-e Roshnai (Enlightening Movement). The activists were protesting against the corrupt Afghan government of President Ashraf Ghani –present at the conference– that has continued the 100+ years policy of systematic marginalization of ethnic Hazaras by successive Afghan governments.
On Saturday, Feb 18, large number of Hazara protesters started pouring in outside conference venue in Munich from all over Europe, and as far as Australia and Afghanistan.
On social media, the global campaign directed massive amount of tweets to the conference hashtag #MSC2017 making it trend third on Twitter.
By mid-day Saturday, the Conference (@MunSecConf) was forced to shield the Afghan President from embarrassment by blocking our twitter feed @hazaranet — who along with other hundreds of other activists were ‘fact checking’ President Ashraf Ghani’s speech real time.

The Protest
The unique aspect of Hazara protests –across the globe– is that most individuals and organizations involved or leading the protest do not know about each other or even belong to any one organization. Some of the notable individuals and organizations that helped spread the word are mentioned below.
